From her humble beginnings in the small Italian town of Carapelle Calvisio in the province of L’Aquila in the Apennine region of Abruzzo, our mother Elsa began her passion for cooking her family’s traditional and outstanding cuisine. Her pastas, sauces, soups and in fact, all her meals are from generations of recipes that have only improved over time.
From her own mother and grandmothers’ kitchens, our mother brought her recipes and techniques to Australia in the 1950s. For over 50 years family, friends and now our ever increasing clientele, have enjoyed and delighted in Elsa’s cooking.
More than twenty years ago, our parents established a small providore store in Hadfield, in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, where a wide selection of Australian and imported smallgoods, cheeses, antipasti and selected grocery items were available. Elsa soon introduced her very own lasagna and bolognese sauce to our loyal customers. To her surprise and the local community’s delight, these homemade inclusions were a big hit. It soon became necessary to expand that small corner store to include a 50 seat cafe/restaurant.
Other delicious homemade meals were introduced, including arancini, gnocchi, minestrone and lentil soups to name a few, using only the freshest and most natural of ingredients, with no preservatives or nasty additives, sourced from local and imported suppliers. Elsa’s meals quickly caught on as a healthy and guilt-free addition to our customers’ shopping list. Eventually that little deli/cafe business was sold to a local family and Apennine Gourmet Foods was born.
We took our love for our mother’s recipes and her passion and dedication to cooking, and transitioned into manufacturing and wholesaling with a much larger range of fresh, homemade Italian meals available in stores all over Victoria. We, at Apennine Gourmet Foods are extremely proud and passionate about our traditional ready- made meals and hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy preparing them for you!
